About Us
Promoting justice. Pursuing peace. Protecting human rights. This is what we believe in - and it doesn't make us an inch less of proud supporters of Israel, Jews and non-Jews alike.
LIBRAEL - Liberal Israel is an NGO based in Israel, promoting Israeli interests - remaining the Jewish homeland, liberal democratic regime, security around and within its borders, and a thriving, prosperous, and inclusive society - while enshrining liberal values, including justice, peace, and human rights.
Founded in 2021 by Rotem Oreg, LIBRAEL - Liberal Israel is led by a group of leading social justice and peace activists from Israeli society.
Our Principles
Agendas
Israeli-Palestinian Peace
Since the October 7 Massacre, the war in Gaza and in Israel’s northern border, the dream of peace is broken - and it is up to us to rebuild it, eyes wide open and feet on the ground.
Even as we work to return our hostages and remove the existential threat on Israelis who live in the south, we will keep building the conditions for a solution that will allow both people to live side by side in peace and security.
Racial Justice
Creating a society that provides
equal opportunity to everyone - Ashkenazy, Sephardic, Black Jews, and Russian-speaking Jews; Israeli Arabs and Israeli Palestinians. Israeli society’s strength is in its diversity,
and Israel is everyone’s home.
Jewish State for All
Making room for every Jew to be Jewish in their own way. Israel is the democratic nation state of the Jewish people, and it should be - but a Jewish state is not a religious state.
Gender Equity
Combating wage gap, women under-representation, and sexual violence. Women’s rights are human rights.
LGBTQ+ Rights
Supporting the Right to Love -
to be who you are, to love whomever your heart desires, however your heart desires.
Climate Action
Reducing emissions, moving to renewable energy, protecting
nature, and climate education.
The climate crisis is the existential threat of our lifetime, and without action - it will kill more Israelis
and Palestinians than any war.
Mental Health
Raising awareness to hardship, ending the stigma, providing tools to identify and respond, and expand the support net.
In the modern era, anxiety, depression, eating disorders, and PTSD are plagues.
Social media, the endless war and economic hardship only makes them worse.

Frequently
Asked Questions
-
What is your political position? Who do you support? We do not support specific individuals or political parties in Israel or the U.S. We’re ideological, but not partisan. We never got involved in partisan politics, and never will.
-
Who supports you?At this stage, all our work is done on a voluntary basis – we are not supported by any organization, government or private donor. We will never accept support from industries or individuals working against our values, such as the fossil fuels or pharmaceutical industries.
-
You claim to believe in "liberal Zionism" - what is liberal Zionism?Zionism is the belief that Israel has a right to exist as the safe, prosperous, democratic nation-state of the Jewish people. It claims that the Jewish people - just like any other people - deserve to live in freedom, security, and dignity. Therefore, anyone who accepts that definition is in fact a Zionist. The liberal concept of Zionism claims that Zionism - Israel's existence as the safe, prosperous, democratic nation-state of the Jewish people - should not be at the expense of anyone else. Specifically, we believe that the Palestinians has the right to live with dignity, liberty, security, and prosperity. As a liberal Zionist organization, we believe that those two components do not contradict one another but complete one another.
-
So, are you for or against the Two-State Solution? We do not deal with specific solutions, the Two-State Solution included. That’s because solutions are policy plans designed to deliver a vision - and we prefer to focus on that vision. Our vision of liberal Zionism, discussed in detail in the paragraph above, is a vision of Israel as the safe, prosperous, democratic nation-state of the Jewish people. Therefore we will support any solution that will properly ensure that.

I'm a progressive. Why should I be interested in Israel? There are plenty of reasons. First, Israel is a key U.S. ally, and both countries share not just national security interests but also social justice interests - and on many aspects, from climate action to public health, Israel is a progressive power. Israel can have a positive role for the world: our work in LIBRAEL is to make that happen. Second, Israel’s story, and the story of the entire Zionist movement, is a progressive story - a divided, persecuted, landless people returning to their indigenous homeland to build "a paragon society" (Hevrat Mofet): a free, just, inclusive democratic nation-state, aspiring to live peacefully side-by-side with Palestinians. Unfortunately the last component wasn't achieved yet, and it is our job to struggle for that. Third, and most importantly, despite all achievements and progress, Israel still has a long road to go towards "paragon society". We in LIBRAEL believe that liberal and progressive activists, Israeli and American alike, can and should work together - to exchange ideas and best practices, to combine efforts and to make both our countries better, freer and more just.
-
Aren't you just another Hasbara organization? We loath the concept of Hasbara (“explanation”). As Israelis, we know Israel has plenty of problems - we’re not avoiding discussing them, we’re not presenting a perfect (and false) image, and we’re definitely not conducting Pinkwashing or Greenwashing.

Israel has its flaws and imperfections, but why talk about it outside of Israel? Wouldn't it be better to present the positive, bright side of Israel? We are proud Israelis, but we also know that Israel still has a long road ahead. It is not enough to be proud of the current achievements (and, to be clear, there is plenty to be proud of), we need to talk about the amends left to be made. When someone receives only good news, they usually suspect that they are being manipulated or targeted for sale - we do not engage in that manner. This is especially true when engaging with progressive audiences, who constantly are looking for progress. It is crucial to present the less-shiny parts of Israel, the aspects and issues we're doing not-as-well-as-we-would-like - and more importantly, to think and talk about how we are going to improve.
